Poem For Grandma Grace on Her Would Be One-Hundredth Birthday

marmalade stained sunset
not far from the walnut tree
California
not far from the coastal range
sweet carpet where my toes dissolve
into sweetness

and gates lie open
inviting
surprising visitors from the door
next door
the smell, sweet smell of
freshly mowed grass
a veranda of wood

an entryway to becoming
that which is welcome
always welcome
the window — in the kitchen
is wide open

deeply we all inhale
